“Mindfulness is the awareness that arises by paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment and non-judgementally”

Mindfulness

Thanks to the pioneering work initiated by yoga teacher Jon Kabat-Zinn, meditation practice, yoga postures and body scan techniques have been helping more and more people reduce stress, cope with pain and manage chronic health conditions.

Mindfulness programmes such as MBSR [Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction] and MBCT [Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy] have been extensively researched over the past 30 years+ and are often available through the NHS as well as privately. MBSR is the treatment of choice for people with chronic pain or other long-term physical health conditions. This course comprises of posture and gentle movement combined with awareness practices.  MBCT is often the favoured option for people with recurrent anxiety and depression and includes elements of CBT [cognitive behavioural therapy] to help people become more aware of unhelpful thinking patterns.

Although the techniques within these mindfulness courses derive from yoga and other eastern disciplines [Buddhism; Zen], they are presented in a secular way, which may make them more accessible to those who may otherwise not consider these techniques due to the association with religion or spirituality.

I have been trained in both Adapted Mindfulness-based Approaches [2013] and Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy [2022] and have delivered sessions and courses in mindfulness to clients and staff groups whilst working as a mental health professional.

I am available to run an 8-week MBCT course if enough people are interested [I need a minimum of 6 people to run the course].
